Politicians like to claim that good policy is good politics. But that's often not true - at all. Pols vote for things (ie from the Dem perspective: Obamacare) & get creamed. And that's fine, but it's important to understand the difference tween the two.
They didn't buy the policy. In 2010 none of the flaws had become apparent - was all still theoretical. Ironically it's now a good issue for them.

the flaws were always apparent. no serious person ever believed you'd be able to keep your doctor or that your premiums would be less than your cell phone bill. tens of millions of people said it was a scam and voted to defeat the scam

But the Dems insisted, out of belief that it was right - they had courage. Voters didn't care because they didn't like the policy.

I don't think Dems ever thought for 1 moment that what they were saying was true. They thought once we got in too deep it wouldn't matter how we got there, same as this thing with Brexit now
