China has grand designs that go beyond GDP, & they don’t have elections every two years. It’s possible U.S. has a greater threshold for pain, but it’s hardly a guarantee. Trade policy that doesn’t account for this, & deep desire of Chinese to ‘save face,’ is problematic. =>https://twitter.com/DPAQreport/status/1043365279080820736 …
Don’t disagree w/ any of this. And it’s possible Trump is accounting for what I mentioned. I just think it needs to me accounted for to have the desired outcome.

I do not know if Trump sees these things in a macro sense, or if he has a grand design. But what I do know is that China's economic power which we have greatly assisted in is now being turned into threatening military power. So anything to put a check on it is probably best
-
I tend to be wary of ‘any action is better than no action’ thinking. But you could be right. We don’t disagree on the China problem.
-
As someone who is not big on tariffs, I would like to hear alternative to the "China problem" which would have any affect. I have heard a lot of criticism of the
@realDonaldTrump actions but have not heard much on alternatives. 1/ -
It is like Russia and Iran, we hear a lot "they are a problem" but the only plan seems to be spend more on defense. Well the greatest tool US has is economic, so I'd rather use it than guns. Reagan and Soviet Union, we will out spend you worked.
-
I would also add that building islands in the middle of the oceans to project military power and using your economic power to cause Google etc to create "un American" search engines etc is a very real threat to US and the freedom of mankind which needs a response.
-
This is a good argument. But it requires more honest leadership about the threat, which is missing and a broad strategy that accounts for various consequences, which might not be. (IE on my list of sometimes nothing is better than something is the Iran Deal.)
-
The reality is that Trump, in his actual actions if not his words, is confronting our adversaries far stronger than any president since Reagan even more so than Reagan actually. Since the media is a "word" driven entity they cover it based on his words rather than his actions.
-
I could quibble here & there but my main disagreement is this: Words & actions both matter. Reagan was solid on both. Lack of action undermines lofty leadership. Lack of the words undermines effectiveness of actions.
