China has grand designs that go beyond GDP, & they don’t have elections every two years. It’s possible U.S. has a greater threshold for pain, but it’s hardly a guarantee. Trade policy that doesn’t account for this, & deep desire of Chinese to ‘save face,’ is problematic. =>https://twitter.com/DPAQreport/status/1043365279080820736 …

China just cancelled the last chance to negotiate before Trump's tariffs hit Monday. American biz groups here react, urging Trump to fix it: “This is brinkmanship that benefits no one." https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/china-cancels-trade-talks-with-us-as-new-trump-tariffs-loom/2018/09/21/c36138ac-be16-11e8-97f6-0cbdd4d9270e_story.html?utm_term=.03e8229f658f …

As someone who has been in "business" for many years there is one undeniable fact, you cannot indefinitely do business with partners that cheat you. On larger scales it may take longer to reach the point where the risk/reward ratio will flip against you but inevitably it will 1

In this case we are dealing with a partner that is not even grounded in free market capitalism but whose stated purpose is global domination. Years of trying to bring China into the fold has only partially worked 2

Ultimately China and any hope of actual globalism for the good of mankind is going to have to change their methods. Whether it happens now with Trump and his tariffs or 20 years from now with war probably are the options short of regime change.

Don’t disagree w/ any of this. And it’s possible Trump is accounting for what I mentioned. I just think it needs to me accounted for to have the desired outcome.

I do not know if Trump sees these things in a macro sense, or if he has a grand design. But what I do know is that China's economic power which we have greatly assisted in is now being turned into threatening military power. So anything to put a check on it is probably best

I tend to be wary of ‘any action is better than no action’ thinking. But you could be right. We don’t disagree on the China problem.

As someone who is not big on tariffs, I would like to hear alternative to the "China problem" which would have any affect. I have heard a lot of criticism of the @realDonaldTrump actions but have not heard much on alternatives. 1/

It is like Russia and Iran, we hear a lot "they are a problem" but the only plan seems to be spend more on defense. Well the greatest tool US has is economic, so I'd rather use it than guns. Reagan and Soviet Union, we will out spend you worked.

Soooo - let’s keep getting ripped off, and letting them steal our IP. Or - let American (& other trade allies) make the products we aren’t getting from China anymore. They may be more expensive, but those additional jobs will allow more domestic sales.
