Great reporting per @DavidMDruckerhttps://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/campaigns/in-north-dakota-farmers-sweat-trumps-trade-war-with-china … – at Double Springs Public Library
This is a view held by many (though not all) and it's reflected in my story.

I raised soybeans and corn in WI until a couple of years ago and have seen trade wars several times as my father also did. It was time someone finally stood up to unfair trading practices and the ending of tariffs would be a huge win even if there's some short term pain.
-
And I'm sure you'd give up any potential subsidies from the US government so that you're not participating in "unfair trading practices" of your own.
-
I already gave up any potential subsidy. In a trade war you have to use every tool available to win, direct payments to producers is only one tool USDA has available through the Commodity Credit Corporation and only a portion of the $12 billion would be direct payments.
-
How do you "win" a trade war?
-
China is totally dependent on exports and cannot survive politically without it so you threaten incredible economic and political harm on the Chinese government until the landscape changes to allow the free flow of goods tariff free creating a much smaller trade deficit.
-
How would a country be totally dependent on exports? Why don't they just make less stuff so they don't have to export it?
