And that something in that direction is what the base wants. Instead, they produce . . . Jeb. Worse, the other candidates are varying degrees of Jeb., except maybe he isn't angrily religious enough or economically libertarian enough.

In part this is blindness, in part it is because the donor class won't stand for it. So there is nowhere else for these voters to go, and the resentment builds over time. "That's how you got Trump" is almost a punchline, but that really is how you got Trump.

...I think a challenge for Rs currently in office is they don’t agree w/ Trump on trade or entitlements - or even immigration. They believe many (not all) of DJT’s policies on those issues would make people worse off. That makes it hard to follow Olsen’s very sensible advice.

They don't believe that it'll make people worse off. Hell,they could care less about what happens to Joe Six-Pack. They oppose them because they have sold themselves body and soul to corporate interests who make money off of policies that screw Joe Six-Pack, so they promote those

I never resort to such. I don't think this is something I can prove because it's subjective analysis - my interpretation of lawmakers' actions and voting records and rhetoric. My reporting over years has led me to believe that most in Congress vote how they actually believe...

Well then, that leaves us with one of 2 conclusions: Since the majority of them don't run on the policies that they push in DC, either A) They are lying to get elected, in which case worrying about their "principled" beliefs is kind hypocritical, or 1/

The third choice is the one that I proposed: They'll do whatever it takes to stay in their comfortable DC lives where everyone bows and scrapes and tells them they are important. Which means representing the desires of donor class, not their constituents.

Fair points. My response: I think you have a misconception of their life in DC. It can be this way but for most it really isn't. I think most push the policies they run on most of the time. Granted, this isn't always the case, & some are better than others on this score...
