..Most think they're doing good, & doing the right thing. And most of their $$ support tends to come from interests that want to keep them in office because said lawmakers support their agenda. This is how it is on the big issues that tend to matter to voters, at least.

Sometimes donor and voter interests diverge, sometimes bigly. Voters don’t want their own health care coverage removed, as a single example, though there are others.
