This is odd, doesn’t make sense, unless someone can explain. =>https://twitter.com/tnewtondunn/status/1017514591763533831 …

My hunch: remember Trump’s claim that ALL THE COUNTRIES want to bilateral trade deals with the US? It’s not true, except for the UK, which wants a deal post-Brexit. But if May agrees to a common EU rulebook, it makes it that much harder to hammer out a bilateral trade deal.

OK, then that makes sense and I understand. Didn’t realize. TY.

The type of Brexit deal the UK does with the EU will impact on the type of deal it can do with other countries - including the US.

Thanks for this. Makes sense now

Because the level of alignment with the EU required by the relatively soft Brexit May is proposing might preclude the kind of deregulatory deal Trump has in mind.
-
And because he wants to see the EU break up. Trump’s words are often random & incoherent, but when he said “the people voted to break it up” that’s exactly how he sees it. The “it” is the EU. He’s not pushing Brexit because he’s that interested in a trade deal with Britain.

He is trying to force Theresa May's hand for a hard brexit. Wants to separate the UK from the EU.
-
Trump is arguing that with a "soft" brexit, there is no point in dealing with the UK since the EU holds all the power.
