On Trump & NATO: 1) He's not the first president to demand more from NATO. 2) He's not the first Republican president to speak frankly about NATO's shortcomings (as he sees them.) 3) He's especially not the first GOP president to frustrate U.S.'s NATO allies...1/

...8) Trump often sounds as though he doesn't believe there's a dividend the U.S. earns from NATO in global influence, peace & stability, benefitting the U.S. economically & militarily, never-mind countering Russia...5/

... 9) Comparatively, past GOP prez's seemed to jawbone NATO allies to ante up to better & more clearly fulfill the mission of alliance - countering Soviet (& now Russian) aggression, etc. (The Euro public was as receptive then as it is now, which is important contest)...6/

...10) Finally, there is a question of
@realDonaldTrump's effectiveness. Will his approach work? Work better than past presidents? Jury's out but skepticism is warranted. P.S.) There is a counter viewpoint to all of this held by some FP thinkers on Right...7/Show this thread -
...These pple contend Trump's heart & head on NATO is more or less where FP traditionalists wld wish it to be, but he speaks differently in accomplishing this mission - & that those who understand his language understand this & therefore aren't worried. Time will tell. 8/8 -fin

Germany's reliance on Russian gas should be much more disconcerting to the other "allies".
-
Maybe so but that's a separate, though related, issue.
-
How can a defense alliance be relevant any longer when major member is supplying the necessary capital to arm the alliance's biggest threat?
-
Europe was doing business w/ Russia when Republicans were mad at Obama for offending our NATO allies & going soft on Russia. This doesn't make NATO irrelevant.
-
China with its economic size and military strength relative to Russia certainly makes it appear so going forward.

Both matter.

Wanting to get a better deal established & more participation from members doesn’t mean he doesn’t believe in its intrinsic value. I think it signals quite the opposite. He’s telling them they are not taking this alliance & Russian threat seriously, we r. It’s clear as day to me.
-
Trump never says what you just said. Hence it's not clear as day to me. His remarks today re the pipeline did not communicate this.

What's the intrinsic value? NADA.

Somehow I pegged you for a globalist.

Ha. The whole system is a joke. They have all been taking advantage of us for far too long. In 2000, German GDP was 65% of U.S. GDP. By 2014 it was 89%.The Euro is the biggest scam in the world. Germany must pay. As I've said since 2015, Europe is worse than China.
