POTUS isn’t just aggressively demanding NATO countries pay up, he’s doing it in a way that sounds as though he questions to value of NATO to the U.S. whether they up or not. And that is what concerns many who agree w/ ‘pay up’ but cringe at POTUS’ approach.
But there is a value to NATO beyond dollars - that even if U.S. were shouldering even more burden the now, would still be of benefit to U.S. Trump doesn’t sound as though he appreciates this intrinsic benefit.

I hear you, but perhaps Trump would come to understand the intrinsic value of NATO if they were paying for their fair share of their mutual defense. His priority is the $, not non measurables. Intrinsic benefits don't compute with Putin. Arms and armies unfortunately do.

The deal is about a relationship to help protect everyone involved and you can’t renegotiate every deal to suit his desire
