I don't think you can compare the two. Trump is a different sort of communicator w/ a specific skill. It's carried him and can't take that away. But Reagan could reach more people and I think was more sophisticated. My hot take.

True, and I don't like a lot of Trump's behavior. OTOH, the left hated Reagan too. Reagan was a transformation POTUS, Trump could be too.

My only quibble is I think it's irrelevant that Left did/does hold both in contempt. I don't think that data point matters. Where I think they're similar is that they both moved party out of ideological box at moment of transition & to match available coalition
