Stores have been spending hundreds of thousands per year on new armed security because shoplifting is falling? Sure... checks out.

In the US, people frequently believe crime is getting worse despite crime dropping dramatically Why wouldn't already paranoid store owners feel the same way? Business people are frequently just straight up wrong about things Or maybe it's the fear of mass shootings?

Because store owners have direct access to the correct information. Walgreens isn't closing stores because they're paranoid.

Here's a rule: if you really want police protection, you report crimes. If it's something you just shrug off, you don't. Fact is, apples to apples, shoplifting complaints have steadily declined for years. It's the surgies burden to show exactly why that data is wrong and 1/

produce some actual, verifiable contrary data. I'm just seeing rank speculation or anecdote substituting for real data. (E.g., prove that shop owners are buying more sophisticated anti-theft devices AND that they're doing it because of a rise in losses, and not because it 2/

saves them money even given the previous, historically low, rates of theft, which doubtless caused some losses. I mean, even in the recent past, lots of money has been spent on anti-theft devices as better ones become available, even without a surge. Surgies must PROVE such 3/

actions are the result of a rise in crime and not just the normal course of business under ordinary crime levels. A tweet won't do it -- provide some data

Here are some retailers complaining about rising shoplifting losses.https://www.sfchronicle.com/local-politics/article/Out-of-control-Organized-crime-drives-S-F-16175755.php …

Retailers complaining about shoplifting is a perennial event. Data shows it's not worse. You don't have an answer to the day except under-reporting but there's really always under-reporting. Even with the usual under-reporting, if there were a surge in crime, it would show up 1/

the data. Unless these super- concerned retailers are reporting crime even less than they used to, which would be nuts for lots of reasons, the data correctly shows no surge in crime. And if you think under-reporting HAS increased, prove it. 2/
