One thing to consider amid the caucuses snafu - the president has thrown accelerant on distrust of institutions, and this is another one. He has highlighted the Dem party ills around this caucus in tweets. It is in contrast to Obama silence on the Romney/Santo mess in 2012.

As Iowa was melting down... built his Calif payroll up to 220. It's gonna grow to 800. And a new poll now finds him tied with nationally. reports from the billionaire's west coast swing.

So far the two clearest winners of the mess last night were Trump and Bloomberg, both of whose luck continues to confound their rivals.

I’ve been reminded as I stumble in a daze through this event that Pete somehow did 3 morning shows and a diner stop this morning. Our vibes rn are ... very different

First big NH event since Iowa meltdown gets underway. No mention of elephant in the cornfield at kickoff. launches right into his stump.

NEXT STEPS: The Iowa Democratic Party has scheduled a call with campaigns at 11 am central time. Campaigns are not expecting to get results but they are hoping for a timeline.

  9. Dems likely too bruised to make this case, but Iowa debacle is good argument for why essential services, like elections, shouldn't be run by private sector & volunteers (even earnest midwestern ones), as opposed to gov't employees.

In new statement, IDP chair Price blames app problem on coding error in app & hints we may not have results today: “While our plan is to release results as soon as possible today, our ultimate goal is to ensure that the integrity & accuracy of the process continues to be upheld.”

  12. Biden may have dodged a bullet. Buttigieg may have lost a victory lap. But New Hampshire has gained new urgency, & write.

A completely sincere thought: Thousands of totally well-meaning people spent a year of their lives working for candidates and their reward was being part of a historic debacle, because the state party fumbled an app. It’s infuriating.

So, & I (among many others) have been spending a lot of time post-2016, thinking about institutions and why they are failing at this moment in history 1/

The 2012 Iowa caucuses were a ****show when Rick Santorum beat Mitt Romney, except it wasn't clear for days. The 2016 Clinton-Sanders photo finish was a mess. Looks like we're headed for 3 for 3. Not a good look.

The latest on delayed results: One precinct chair just told me he still hasn't been able to report his results because the phone app is not working and he's been on hold for the call hotline for more than 30 minutes. More from my story this morning

  18. If you're gonna have a slow count & leave everyone uncertain for hours, just go all the way and do it California style.

I’m at a caucus site at Walnut Ridge Senior Living facility in Clive (a Des Moines suburb). This is geared toward residents of the facility, plus their family and residence staff. Lots of Biden and Klobuchar fans here.

How much is Twitter a bubble? Only 19% of caucus goers get news from Twitter according to entrance polls. Only 19% of the most activist voters, who go to many candidate events before making decisions and who are willing to spend 3-4 hours in a gym to vote.
