That's always the hard one. The problem is for every good "laboratory" there's a six week abortion ban. And ultimately those emblematic policies were decided at the federal level anyway (courts, prosecutorial discretion) so it's hard to quantify how valuable it is.
-
So federalism is good if you approve of the policy, but people deciding for themselves on a local level is bad policy if you don't like their decision?
-
On flip side, I like gay marriage as a policy matter (the con law issue is debatable, or was, pre-Obergefell), so I supported states being labs in this too.
-
I see federalism as the solution on the divisive issues. Some states can support an issue, some oppose -- and we avoid the central government ruling over everyone on one side.

#HearHear! Same-sex marriage was moved along much more swiftly by statewide evidence that kids weren't harmed by having gay/bi parents It's not that States' rights are "stupid"; it's that States err and the federal gov. or the judiciary need to step in to protect minority rightsThanks.
