Alternate title: When the Federalist Society decided federalism was inconvenient.https://twitter.com/davidlat/status/994275345800073217 …

It's entirely a states' rights issue. It was heavily tied to the Dixiecrat way of life. It's been a dumb custom because states' rights are dumb. So even though it's going away for the most cynical reasons possible, it's a good thing.
-
So I agree with your Dixiecrat point, but I still think federalism has a useful place when states can be policy laboratories (gay marriage, marijuana, etc.).
-
That's always the hard one. The problem is for every good "laboratory" there's a six week abortion ban. And ultimately those emblematic policies were decided at the federal level anyway (courts, prosecutorial discretion) so it's hard to quantify how valuable it is.
-
So federalism is good if you approve of the policy, but people deciding for themselves on a local level is bad policy if you don't like their decision?
-
On flip side, I like gay marriage as a policy matter (the con law issue is debatable, or was, pre-Obergefell), so I supported states being labs in this too.
-
I see federalism as the solution on the divisive issues. Some states can support an issue, some oppose -- and we avoid the central government ruling over everyone on one side.
