On whether college (yes, college!) writings are relevant to considering a judicial nomination (some 20+ years later), please read my @ATLblog post about the Ryan Bounds situation (based on my @WSJopinion piece):http://bit.ly/2qCZPhm

Obviously, Senator Scott, who actually has a vote on confirmation, thinks so.

I disagree. Reasonable people can discount youthful writings as appropriate. Context matters. But ultra-extremist views by a college student, e.g. genocide advocacy, warrant inquiry. College students are not 3-year-olds.

TIm Scott, the 1 black Republican Senator, would not vote for him. So there’s that🤷‍♀️btw, being anti gun is not the same as being anti gay, anti black or anti woman. #Falseequivalency

You are merely dismissing the significance of the info. Is there nothing you would want to know from long ago? Child molestation? Money laundering? What kicks your bucket?

Suppose years ago in college a candidate had written often that gay men should be barred from some important right on morality grounds? No comments since. Should we not TALK about that in a judicial nom context. This isn’t an applicatiom for dogcatcher.

Maybe. But withholding said writings from the Oregon judicial selection committee as a full-grown adult definitely is.

This is stupid. Of course it matters. He was an adult. As adults we are accountable for our actions. I doubt you would feel the same if it was a liberal being considered. You would be arguing that he was showing his true self back then & now has learned to hide those beliefs.

While it is awful to lose such a wonderfully impressive nominee to a court, my heart goes out to Bounds and his family. This is probably devastating for him and his aspirations. I am praying for him.

We are in a “gotcha era.” Opposition research doesn’t care about relevance. But I also don’t think 80% of people reverse their core values from college through life. As they seek higher positions, they just keep them quiet. Nothing wrong with revisiting to ask “why.”
