True, but they did confirm Kennedy after that, whereas Garland was a non-starter. the refusal even to consider the president's nominee ushered in a new era.

Ranking "brilliance" is nonsensical. By what measure? In any case, it's irrelevant. The justices don't decide cases based on the depths of their understanding of the law.
