But there's the flipside--if they don't nominate a person who's "short listed" and who has a big fan base, you risk backlash from their fans.

I'm also curious if the shortlist has an effect in terms of judge temperament or writing. Of course I highly doubt any judge would change an outcome of a case itself because of the list. But even for Sen. Lee I wonder if dangling SCOTUS altered his rhetoric about POTUS.
