I’m reporting for duty as the punching bag for progressives/liberals re: #SCOTUS - color me non-hysterical about Justice Kennedy’s retirement. The Republic will survive (but boy will this fight be ugly). #AppellateTwitter

I think we'll survive. But goddamn am I ready for things to be boring again.

Amen to that! I was hoping to quietly roll into July 4th holiday. Sigh....

Read your ATL piece. You are delusional. SCt is no longer legitimate. With Kennedy’s replacement, it will do whatever Trump & his base want. Precedent obviously means nothing to the right wing political hacks on court. Will uphold legislation outlawing gay marriage & abortion.

Reasonable minds can disagree on the future of #SCOTUS; you might find @ElieNYC's piece from yesterday more to your liking:https://abovethelaw.com/2018/06/anthony-kennedy-is-retiring/ …

Thanks. I have no doubt we each think we are reasonable people. But SCt isn’t reasonable. I read Mystal’s piece when it first came out and have been clamoring for court packing for a long time. Falling on deaf ears, probably until SCt overturns Roe and/or Obergefell.

Of course the Republic will survive. But some of us want healthcare and reproductive rights for our friends and family while it exists.

Im not thrilled. Still, it’s somewhat fitting that after years of hand ringing and “what if’s” in the mind of conservatives that pushed for Kennedy’s appointment, he decided to hang it up at the perfect time to atone (to them) for his flitatious affair with cosmopolitanism.
