Right but a lot of the work seems self-imposed: rush to ship a feature for a deadline (business value), spend a week fixing all the bugs introduced by that (no business value), accumulate tech debt (negative business value)

I don't fully agree. At least in the Java ecosystem many open source projects are from big companies like RedHat, Pivotal, IBM where the developers are employees of these companies

I said "developers" as in the "majority of developers" not "all developers". Twitter isn't strictly-typed.

Ehh... to me it's overall value. Even though the value of OSS projects isn't readily apparent, it has to be many times more than internal work for a single company. Many musicians I know (inc. me) made the majority of their money teaching music lessons, which is good value!
