Every time you write “penicillin allergy” in the chart without describing the allergy, an angel gets unnecessarily heavy-duty antibiotics, MRSA, C. diff., two more weeks in hospital, a decubitus ulcer, a massive PE and a goals of care discussionhttps://www.bmj.com/content/361/bmj.k2400 …

The trouble is that teicoplanin, which is often used instead, doesn't seem to be an antibiotic. It also causes a fair bit of anaphylaxis in its own right @LondonAllergy

Can't remember the last time Pen allergy stopped me from giving cefazolin. Can't remember last time Pen allergy was anaphylactic either...

I had this on my chart for a while. Also said I’d been treated with Augmentin repeatedly.

Which is weird, because everybody knows Augmentin is amoxicillin plus diarrhea.

hi, from the patient perspective: that’s literally all we’re told, but we’re told that it’s really important, so we’re not exactly enabled to be helpful in this scenario

@jodiecongirl has a great point - as the MD/RPh/RN etc, it's our job to take a good history/BPMH including context around allergies - not really the patients job to know/interpret the significance of what they've previously been told about their health info
