. reporting UK to offer vaccines to Ireland once stocks are secured for domestic rollout. The right thing to do. Ireland shares a land border with UK and is part of the Common Travel Area. Many Irish live here and vote in UK elections. And it is a longstanding friend.

When even the Observer accuses the EU of “panicky leadership, national blame-games, bureaucratic and regulatory tardiness, and post-Brexit anti-British animus”, it’s a sure sign there’s something seriously amiss with the European project:

It’s good that the EU have seen sense and u-turned on their attempt to stop access of vaccine to Northern Ireland. Now let them abandon their plan to impound Pfizer. They should seek to settle their dispute with AstraZeneca without trying to hold third parties to ransom.

How much goodwill has the EU burned over the past 24 hours, not least in Ireland, whose people it was seemingly happy to cast to the wolves?

The EU are being very unwise. They are compounding their error in effectively banning the export of vaccine to the UK by behaving disrespectfully to the people of Ireland, North and South. They should reverse their provocative actions before more damage is done.

The EU have a dispute with AstraZeneca Sweden, so decide to respond by blocking the supply of vaccines to the UK, which is not a party to the dispute. Do the EU not care that they are trashing their international reputation? They were once so keen to talk about the rule of law.

German efforts to cast doubt on the efficacy of the AstraZeneca vaccine make the EU’s extreme eagerness to get their hands on it all the more perplexing.

The UK funded development of AstraZeneca vaccine and placed an early order for 100 m doses, well before the EU. It’s not just a straightforward contractual position, it’s a matter of politeness. You don’t try to barge your way to the front of the cinema queue if you turn up late.

Ideally “lumpy” supply chain will fade away as more stock comes online. But if Drakeford’s jabbers can’t cope with fluidity then he should admit that and ask for help. Instead bizarre policy choice - deliberately sitting on stock when you’re already going slower than UK rate.

Mr Drakeford on still refusing to deploy the Pfizer vaccine as quickly as possible, and giving a wholly incoherent explanation for the delay. Unbelievable.
