Now we're properly into 2020 let's go into the detail of the UK-EU trade negotiations for the year head. Thread. TL:DR there are multiple negotiations, and none of them are simple, even the "barebones" FTA... 1/

Keeping me busy today to absorb speeches and documents and reflect them in a panel discussion on future UK EU relations. Reflections on the discussion follow tomorrow

Can't let this go though... basically not true, and US farmers following UK animal welfare standards? Now who wants to export domestic regulations? All still to play for...

Ok, more meetings to come, but summary of the day so far - we have more detail, but it all fits in broadly to what we already knew of UK and EU approaches in the future. UK is talking a grand game without detail, the EU has the detail but not necessarily the grand picture.

Those suggesting Johnson mentioning science in his speech means inevitability of US food in a deal should note this is in fact a WTO requirement. It is all in the interpretation. That is what we await.

Good luck removing US non-tariff barriers. Hard to think of any trade deal they've ever done which achieves that (due to the US regulatory system predominantly, USTR argues this cannot be bound in trade agreements)

Important point. The predominant view globally is that the UK is part of the move towards protectionism (leaving the EU, restrictive on movement of people), and the UK overall is likely to be more closed to trade after Brexit than before.

Essentially - we can have a US trade deal if we accept US food and an EU trade deal if we accept EU level playing field conditions. The two may yet clash in a couple of areas.

We have a draft Commission negotiating mandate and a Johnson speech at the same time. Hard to keep up - but interesting from Johnson that the UK's approach to food being included in US trade deal remains ambiguous.

I very occasionally get this, so to clarify: as someone who writes and advises on trade policy, the absolute worst thing for my career would have been for the UK to have somehow ended up remaining in the EU.

Trying to divide EU Member States was, against stiff competition, one of the sillier UK negotiating strategies of Brexit phase 1, which won't stop it being repeated in phase 2

There's been lots of talk about Brexit forcing a choice between US or EU alignment. It looks as though Govt is keen to inject a third party into the mix: Australia. So what's the rationale behind the spotlight on a nation of 25m people on the other side of the world? [Thread..]

More stories of Brexit... the devaluation of the UK passport is a clear consequence.

And nothing I’ve said above is controversial; economics are pretty standard (see tweet below).

Thought you'd get a break from Brexit between Brexit Day and the first working day after Brexit Day? Clearly not. The question is why. Why such fast, such bullish govt action? Some thoughts (thread). /1

So HMGs hope is that the threat is credible enough for the EU to fear it, but not credible enough for business to fear it. Good luck with that.
