Happy to announce my new book, "The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, & Murder," is done! About castaways stranded on a desolate island who descend into anarchy & murder. And about how people and nations tell stories—and manipulate them.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine have breached the occupiers' first line of defence near Kherson. They believe that Ukraine has a real chance to get back its occupied territories, especially considering the very successful use of Western weapons by the Ukrainian army.

And here it is... My first book will land in the world on November 9. I hope it lands well. I’m both nervous and excited. Writing is not easy, especially about yourself, and penning this book was certainly tough at times. But honestly… What a ride!

John was one of the greatest editors, and I feel so blessed to have known him and been guided by his wisdom. He was whip-smart, generous, and soulful.

My dad and best friend, John Bennet (@slothead) passed away peacefully at home, his family camped out around his bed. He loved my mom. He loved The New Yorker. He loved teaching young people. A charmed life for a poor kid from Athens, Texas. I was so blessed to have him as a dad.

Quote of day from Alex Garland: “I find myself getting less and less certain about everything.” Even your own work? “Oh, I have no certainty about that. That’s just a bunch of compulsions.”

Alex Garland's "Ex Machina" is a film I am particularly fond of, so the notion that his latest, "Men," might be his last is as disquieting as his movies. @kylebuchanan provides the details. nytimes.com/2022/05/16/mov

He's a famous #Ukrainian pop singer. As the war began, he enlisted himself into the Armed Forces. He was ordered to continue singing for troops to keep up their morale high. Here he's in the most surreal concert venue - nuclear contaminated #Chernobyl.
