Yes, Buckley kept the Birchers out. But from Nixon's Southern Strategy on, significant elements of GOP/conservative movement have stoked/exploited racial resentments and other ugliness. It's not a pretty history. (I'll leave redbaiting to the side for now.)https://twitter.com/sykescharlie/status/1054758431456980992 …

Don't deny that. But I also think it worth noting that there was/is another non-crazy conservative tradition... Here's the whole piece: https://www.weeklystandard.com/charles-j-sykes/debating-the-once-and-future-conservatism …

@SykesCharlie I believe Conservatism...and the GOP went way off the rails with Newt Gingrich...and it may never recover. The present day GOP may be the catalyst for a third party...right of center fiscally and left of center socially.

The Degradation of the GOP began with Nixon; he planted the seeds; Reagan watered them and was canonized by the GOP for it; and Gingrich harvested the bitter fruits and gave us poison politics and the current GOP party of Deplorables.

I never felt comfortable with the appeals to racist sentiment in the GOP--Willie Horton, for example. But Democrats have unclean hands as well, including exploiting minority voters and running anti-"blue collar" campaigns. Politics is nasty. cc @SykesCharlie @MaxBoot

What you are missing though is who supports and listens to disadvantaged populations in terms of policy and representation? Not just tokenism, but actually puts decision makers in power that understand being powerless?

Who cares about Buckley? He's dead. The GOP is literally owned and run by the sons of the founder of the John Birch society. It's a cult now.

@SykesCharlie read a thread of how Newt doing the same thing. This has been at least 40 years in the works just more brazenly done now. Doesn’t mean you’re wrong though, there have been individuals whom spoke out from time to time. IMHO the Tea Party main streamed it.

Stone, Cheney, Ailes, Rove, Atwater - many others perhaps. All with deep ties to the Nixon campaign and Whitehouse. This is where the seeds were planted, but the party was blindsided when the Tea Party harvested the crop and then again when Trump baked the bread. #pureevil
