    There are of course exceptions. But the courtesy and empathy and compassion I've seen exhibited -- over and over again -- by people whom society has written off is one of the most inspiring experiences of my life.

    Just finished two days of prison tours. I'm always amazed at the ability of incarcerated people to maintain their humanity, despite the dreadful and dehumanizing conditions under which so many of them are forced to live.

    Jailed for cocaine possession. As he was detoxing, he asked multiple times for medical help. When his condition worsened, jail staff placed him in an isolation cell. He died in that cell, alone, from a perforated ulcer. Jails won't stop killing people.

    In the 2000s my brother, my mother, my wife, and I were put on the no fly list -- simply because of our last name. My elderly father was even delayed trying to cross from Canada to Seattle to visit his newborn grandson.

    People incarcerated in Arizona had cancer that went untreated, and were even told to pray to be cured after asking for treatment. Yesterday's ruling affirms what we already knew. This type of care is unacceptable, unconstitutional, and must be fixed.
