David Blue’s Tweets

I can’t believe this has to be said but if you tweet directly at a filmmaker to just shit on their work, you are morally/ethically out of line. Just because we are out here, it doesn’t give you the right to insult us. By all means, have an opinion and share it with whomever you

Time will change how we look on the outside. Time will also change how we feel on the inside. No matter how we change, two things are true: you are beautiful and you matter.

Tapes are an important backup plan. In-room (safe) auditions: •most accurately reflect the job needs •allow for quick notes & changes •ensure good/consistent lights & sound •give actors live energy to feed off

During the pandemic actors were told to tape at home, but not spend money on it. … and then directed to include a full-body pan up-and-down in their slate. While quarantining safely alone. 🤨 I don’t know how your long-ass arms bend, but that ain’t possible.

Also, can we all stop with the “no need to prepare” & “don’t spend money on this” hubbub? That’s a lack of awareness of what an actor’s job is. Preparation is required (that’s acting.) Money is required (for that good lighting, that good sound, that good tape.)

Having to tape means finding a reader, setting up equipment, lights, editing, etc. None of this is the job an actor is interviewing for. An actor will not be asked (or allowed) to do these things. So the act of taping just makes the job they ARE aiming for harder to tackle.

(And, to be fair, a great in-room audition doesn’t mean that either. But at least you watched it happen once!) A tape has too many variables to accurately demonstrate the needed job skills you are “interviewing” for. In-room is still the closest parallel.

But ... as a producer, a great audition self-tape doesn’t mean what you think. You get a great tape. Cool! But that might have been take 1… or take 1000. You have no way of knowing. So you may hire someone who cannot deliver on the day (I’ve seen it.)

(Preface: pre-pandemic self tapes were great for people unavailable - whether out of town filming or for personal reasons. And during the pandemic it allows for safe auditioning or opening opportunities to more people. Yay! 🤟)

I enjoy helping actors. I’ve helped people get on shows, screens and stages everywhere. I love helping them however I can. And 🙌 to coaches, teachers and tapers who make their living that way. Woot! BUT…

A professor once said: “auditions are the worst. They don’t tell you who would be best for the role. They are flawed & broken. If you have a better idea, please let us know. We’ve been waiting. In the meantime, this is what we’ve got.”

I love that people are speaking on self-tapes. Nobody needs ME to weigh in, but I have thoughts and this is my little carved-out corner of the interwebz. So, here goes… (A THREAD)

Just saw an ad on my instagram for a respected casting director’s office offering self tape opportunities for a fee. If we can go to casting and tape, can’t we just go to casting and actually read without paying $50 an audition?

Several actresses like Ever Carradine, Merrin Dungey and Sprague Grayden turned to Twitter this week to express frustration over the pandemic-era trend of (costly) tape auditions and whether in-person tryouts are truly a thing of the past deadline.com/2023/03/hollyw
