One of the things about incel culture that a lot of people don't get--but this post shows in spades--is just how fundamental neoliberal market logic is embedded in the whole, uh, "scene."https://twitter.com/chick_in_kiev/status/990235360209915905 …

Ironically, this incel has no problem with the state intervening in the "sexual marketplace" to enforce "fairness" in the market and make sure women don't have sex with too many men or have sex with someone "out of their league."pic.twitter.com/6c6xTVtpAm
If this sounds like a bizarre sexual hybrid of neoliberalism and crony capitalism, well, welcome to 2018. (And hell, naturally.)
I've tried to have empathy for the incel crowd in the past. I really have. I remember what it was like to be a pissed-off college-aged virgin.
But even then, the whole incel stuff weirded me out, because of the thinly-veiled misogyny and the inability to think about social relationships outside of market metaphors.
Even as an impressionable angry young white guy with--I'm sorry to say--a misogynistic streak, I was too much of a leftie to ever really buy into "marketplace" talk. I credit this to my parents and teachers. *Thank you.*
Jesus, has this guy never heard of lead-based makeup? Foot binding? FGM? To say nothing of the jaw-dropping sexism, this guy seems entirely unaware of the centuries of history of women being pressured and/or forced to "beautify" themselves and "increase their marketability."
It’s fascinating how men and women function differently here, though both simultaneously as product and consumer... Talk about alienated labor!
