Yeah, yeah, people are quibbling that when you factor in stops, it's probably closer to 24 hours. Still, I've been on the crummy overnight trains from the East Coast to Chicago several times. They're surprisingly popular, and the runs are about that long.

Now, if that's how long it takes to get to the other side of the freakin' CONTINENT... yeah, doable. Especially if they wised up and introduced a modern version of the Pullman sleeper as a halfway between coach and a cabin.

Anyway, more relevant is that you could get from Penn Station in Manhattan to Union Station in Chicago in 6 hours. Hell, it takes 4.5 hours counting transfers (and not counting security lines) to get from Penn to Union by plane.

I'm going to bed, but one more thing to consider: HSR would also be a catalyst for commuter/metro rail in many cities, and encourage density/development near downtown cores.

This is what was supposed to happen in the Twin Cities with HSR to Chicago, before Wisconsin Republicans put the kibosh on it. The old Union Depot in St. Paul is the terminus for the light rail Green Line. It was redeveloped specifically to serve as a regional transit center.

And it actually *IS* serving that purpose reasonably effectively today. It's just that the original plans envision several daily HSR trains from Chicago, instead of the sole Chicago-Seattle train pulling in at 10:30pm.

Another thought: if the trains on this hypothetical U.S. rail network ran at speeds comparable to the Chinese network, Chicago would be two hours away from Minneapolis, Omaha, Kansas City, Memphis, Nashville, Pittsburgh, and Toronto.pic.twitter.com/5UM0qYNB8h

You gotta understand that Midwesterners think nothing of spending 6 hours in the car driving someplace. The only time I've ever flown from Minneapolis to Chicago is a connecting flight somewhere else. An HSR network based out of Chicago would be a real game changer.

And as for planes... most of the flights to and from satellite cities are connections. You don't just fly direct from Minneapolis to Nashville. (Well, you *could* but it's $$$.) You connect in Charlotte or Atlanta and spend 6 hours in transit.

It makes a hell of a lot more sense to just take the goddamn train and connect through Chicago. And it *TAKES THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME.*

With an actual HSR, it would take about the same amount of time to go Minneapolis-Chicago-Des Moines as it would to drive direct to Des Moines from Minneapolis!pic.twitter.com/d1Oc4eqlSg
