When someone is wearing a mask while walking outside or sitting in a park where the chance of contracting or spreading the virus is nearly non-existent, what would you call it other than fear?https://twitter.com/DavidAFrench/status/1313521499685486592 …

One of the most pernicious elements of the stupid and mendacious mask culture war has been the effort to recast simple prudence and care for others as "fear."

Your policing of other people's mask-wearing is a public service. Thank you. But you of course know that superfluous use harms no one. The failure to use when appropriate can kill.

Lots of things don’t harm us but I still wouldn’t be in favor of a society that does them by habit or mandate. What’s the limiting principle? When will you agree that it’s absurd to wear masks everywhere? Or would you be okay with this as a permanent fixture of American life?

I have never advocated wearing masks everywhere. I have advocated complying with mask mandates even when I might disagree with their scope and with wearing them even when not mandated where it's appropriate and prudent. It's a matter of caring for others.

But if you're wearing a mask in a situation where your chance of spreading COVID is virtually zero (like if you're asymptomatic and simply walking past someone, for example), you aren't "caring for others" because your mask in no way benefits them, except maybe emotionally.

And why is that last bit a burden? If someone would feel better if I put on a mask in the midst of a pandemic that has killed 215,000 Americans and seriously sickened countless more, I'm not going to give them a science lecture. I'm going to happily put on the mask.

David I'm a fan but I think Matt has a point here. We ought to be clear about when and where masks actually help, because it's not just people wearing it superfluously, it's also those same people shaming others who fail to wear it superfluously, and that's dangerous.

First of all, if the mask thing is largely about protecting people emotionally, be honest and say so. Because that's certainly not how it's sold. As for the idea that we should cover our faces to make others feel better, I just reject that absolutely and in principle.

I golf - should I wear a mask the entire time to make the person on the hole behind me feel more comfortable? Should we silence speech to make people feel better too? Where does it end when you govern on feelings alone.

My cousin is the same way. He's a parking attendant at a hospital and has really struggled as he relies heavily on reading lips in order to understand others and communicate. The nurses at the hospital got him this little sign to add to his ID lanyard:pic.twitter.com/SnH0zbAEUS

and if someone is surrounded by a whole bunch of people who don't care and it doesn't make them feel better? good for them? or shame on them?
