Was @bariweiss "canceled"? In one sense, no. She left on her own and she’ll find a place to write. Her critics achieved their goal, however. Bari is removed from “their” turf, and they achieved it through cruelty, the tool of the cancel culture trade: (🔒)https://frenchpress.thedispatch.com/p/when-cruelty-wins …

Why should we be alarmed? I don't think we should underestimate the power of cruelty over its targets, and the extent to which cruelty corrupts our ability to sustain liberal institutions: /2pic.twitter.com/wy2AhXJy9V

Courage overcomes cruelty, but one of the most poignant aspects of Bari's letter was her direct question to her bosses. How could you let this happen? /3pic.twitter.com/GDAyabbQzz

Bari’s an independent thinker. She has her own mind. But there’s another word to describe her. Bari Weiss is kind. Spend any time talking to her, and you’ll be impressed by her warmth. It's a sign of our broken times that she of all people was subject to a campaign of hate. /end

I agree with Weiss about the intolerant mob. I disagree about her being cancelled. She had the platform to fight intolerance and she willfully gave it up and immediately embraced the most precious commodity of today’s internet - personal victimhood.

Funny, I don’t see her as a victim at all. Quite the contrary. She left on her own accord and let them know exactly what she thought of them on the way out. That’s the opposite of victimhood in my opinion. It’s courageous.

Bari may be kind personally. But she used her job to cause harm to a great many people - I can't see past that. So when complaining about people being cruel to her, please take that into account.

if only any of that warmth and kindness came through in her political opinions.

I admire her courage and her remaining true to her principles. Bari will surely blaze a new trail and I can’t wait to see what she does next.

Yeah, I think she intentionally skirted his point in this critique. In the video of her discussion of it, she goes all the way to the border of his point, then refuses to go further; retreats in favor of throwing stones at the reasoning on the other side. Convenient controversy.

I personally know two people she has tried to have fired because she disagreed with them, but I suppose it’s only cancel culture when someone who lucked into one of the most significant platforms on earth quits in a tantrum.
