A proposed test for diagnosing when your politics is threatening to become your religion: If you learn someone shares your faith but not your politics, and you immediately distrust their faith, then your politics might be displacing your religion.

This is an outstanding and thought-provoking piece. Please read.

I've got a new essay on the phenomenon of "wokeness" in this month's @TheAtlantic. It has been revelatory for me to see the ways U.S. culture and institutions changed after the summer of 2020, and how that transformation has reverberated internationally. theatlantic.com/magazine/archi

Not all reform ideas are wise. Some ideas are dangerous. But reforms designed to refocus officers around one of their indispensable missions--preserving civil rights even as they preserve civil order--are concretely pro-police in a way that should transcend partisan divides. /end

That's why we can't reflexively look at police reform as anti-police. Effective reform that reinforces accountability is pro-police. It helps preserve the integrity of the institution and the public's trust in the institution. /4

A healthy police and military include systems that protect officers and soldiers from their own worst instincts and inclinations. Power is seductive. Fear is dangerous. Even good people can go astray if left to their own devices or sufficiently stressed. /3

if you support institutions, especially essential institutions like the police and military, your job isn't to reflexively defend them but to build them in healthy ways. That includes supporting systems that establish accountability and reinforce integrity. /2

One thing I've been thinking a lot about since the murder of Tyre Nichols (and since multiple other terrible incidents)--what does it mean to "support" an institution, to be "pro-police" or "pro-military"? I consider myself both pro-police and pro-military, but.../1

A very interesting podcast, and a very interesting argument.

I was skeptical of this argument. But Prof. Hyrum Lewis makes a compelling case that Left-Right political spectrum is bogus—and adhering to it misleads and harms Americans. Give our PODCAST a listen, and decide for yourself! mattklewis.com/matt-lewis-and

An interesting and fluid conversation on the fight for the American right. Of course @DavidAFrench and I don't agree on everything – notably the Iraq war - but hearing him unpack the divisions within American conservatism is fascinating | @newlinesmag newlinesmag.com/podcast/the-fi

Yep. That’s also why courts can rule statutes/regulations void for vagueness if they don’t give precise enough guidance for compliance. Ordinary folks should be able to understand the law.
Quote Tweet
The vagueness is the point. It's meant to make educators feel on thin ice, perpetually fearful of violating antiwoke orthodoxy. This invites more complains from parents and encourages them to see plots to indoctrinate their children around every corner: washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/

A very good, sober-minded thread on the impact of the planned tank deliveries to Ukraine. It’s a welcome development, but unlikely to be a game-changer. At least not without further combined arms capabilities.
Quote Tweet
Thread. It's good news that NATO members will provide modern tanks to Ukraine. Tanks remain a critical component in ground warfare, and Ukraine has the most experienced tank crews in the world. However, we should be realistic about what these deliveries mean. twitter.com/ChristopherJM/…
