I thought of it, but effort, the current state of the postal system, the need for a kernel patch to do it right (without the fake LVDS hack), and the guy who designed the board putting Pepe on it of all things... all convinced me I was better off with a standard replacement.

There's a version by 51NB that also optionally gets you an extra mSATA slot instead of the expresscard slot. Including 1440p support if you wanted to. If you're running coreboot there are patches that make it work whatever OS/Kernel you're running.

https://review.coreboot.org/c/coreboot/+/28950 … here they are. Should work with the 51nb board even though Nitrocaster's is listed.

If you're willing and able to order through taobao, probably. My Chinese is only as good as Google Translate's. https://world.taobao.com/item/557203626813.htm …

I'm... not sure I can handle that. I wouldn't trust myself to Google Translate my way through ordering in Chinese.

There are so called "taobao agents" who can do it for you (for an extra free). Someone I know that did the mod ordered it through http://superbuy.com . Took a few weeks to ship to the US, not too sure how long that would take to Japan.

I think I'll pass this time, but I'll keep it in mind for next :-)

I bought a board via superbuy (around a year ago) and it was shipped to the UK in about a week. The one I got only required a small coreboot patch (I don't think it's been upstreamed yet, unfortunately) and everything Just Worked.
