Can't confirm that. With my Linux Mate machine under firefox it's no problem to get content in 1080p even without modifying the user agent.

pretty simple. Linux is open-source and not "secure" in the eyes of the content owners. I know that's up for grabs but that's why in a nutshell. Google also doesn't offer a CDM for Linux just their version in Chrome browser on Chrome.

Google actually does offer a CDM for Linux, it ships with their desktop Chrome builds (although I guess it's the same as what they ship on ChromeOS?), and is compatible with Firefox, Chromium etc. since it's just the standard EME CDM interface.

they might want to work around broken/non existing hw acceleration.

Hardware acceleration is only possible once you've stripped the DRM :P (if they used hw accel, you could just hook the data as it gets passed to the decoder) This is why DRM is stupid.
