If you expect a refund when a Kickstarter you back fails to deliver, you probably shouldn’t be using Kickstarter. http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4472659

@willsmith The larger issue is that most people don't understand the definition of "invest"

.@DaveVoyles I’d argue that Kickstarter should have different tiers of risk. One for speculative projects, one for product per-orders.

@willsmith @DaveVoyles your pre-order money is directly funding the development of the product, though...

@ja2ke @willsmith Correct. But you aren't doing it in return for increased financial compensation at the end of a period. That's investing.

@DaveVoyles @willsmith Kickstarter never uses the word invest. They talk about pledging and backing. You get rewards, not returns. Like PBS.

@ja2ke @willsmith I'd imagine that it is a pretty common occurrence for AAA though, where pre-orders help gauge how much to spend on a game

@DaveVoyles @willsmith Maybe how much to spend on marketing or a last minute push, but not core dev. That's largely over before preorders.

@ja2ke I've never done AAA so I really don't know :/. Dammit can we just get a KS going for Mega Man Legends 3 already!

@DaveVoyles Neither have I! The people I do know who work in AAA are usually years into development when the pre-order rush/push happens.

@DaveVoyles whereas with pre-order-based KS's, that pre-order money is literally their budget. That's why high priced altruism tiers exist.

@ja2ke That's a good point. Those high tiers are what keep a lot of these projects afloat!
