I think that makes them less scary. Thomas the train engine by itself scared me as a child. They look more like train robbers with dunce hats thanks to their anthropomorphic body.

These people could have benefited from cartoons and children's shows that tried to be more inclusive and reflective of real-life society when they were younger. Maybe they wouldn't be so ignorant and intolerant today.
