I've been pre-publishing research related to an upcoming piece because I think there is an urgent need for others (and the intelligence community) to have it. Here are three of four planned threads, with raw research + links to sources. Part 1, The Event:

1/PART 1, THE EVENT: I’ve been working on an investigation for @WashSpec that reaches to the very top of the Kremlin. It’s a few weeks from completion, but we decided to share this work in progress early because failing to do so may place people in significant danger.

What Elon Musk's text messages tell us about how he might run Twitter: - Fire tons of employees - Squeeze power users for $ - Prioritize free speech & reinstate banned users - Consult w/ conservatives like Ron DeSantis - Not put it on the blockchain More:

The Russian army is losing on all significant front lines. This is a fact. It is also a fact that Russia activates its soft propaganda through sympathizers among veterans, politicians, and figures in Western countries. More often we will read that "Ukraine must negotiate".

I won't be sending regular updates through this channel in the near term, and when/if I do, you'll be able to easily opt-out. This is just a proactive measure to start building capacity outside of this platform. Thanks for your ongoing support! 🙏

Today is the 2-year anniversary of the Great Barrington Declaration, an influential document originating from fringe medical experts groomed by a Koch-funded libertarian think-tank urging governments to embrace mass infection and “focused protection” as the path to herd immunity.

The only “hysteria” has been in echoes of Russian State Media’s coverage of this. Regardless, if this submarine is in fact in the Arctic as Sutton indicates, that’s a notable datapoint.

Longtermism is a cautionary tale. No matter how finely tuned your cost/benefit model, if someone can introduce arbitrarily large numbers into the mix, they make it say whatever they want.

It's a very good time to request your Twitter archive & get ready to bail on this venue before a certain party gets his grasping paws on your personal contribution to twitter.

5/but it probably has to do with what kinds of accounts are counted as “live” and that criteria having perceived side effects. Speaking to all of this from my experience as the first developer using the Twitter API in 2007. If has input I’d love to hear it too.

Platform risk is real. Especially in the hands of even fewer people, and lack of any public oversight.

Remember Geoff Golberg, the guy who exposed how the Iran bot network works and then promptly got kicked off of Twitter, the same website which partly belongs to Saudi Arabia, which also happens to be a main sponsor of the Iranian opposition 🤔🤔 twitter.com/HadiNasrallah/…

I’ll add: I don’t think there is some especially urgent risk of getting thrown off here (behavior being equal), but the platform isn’t very trustworthy now in its decision-making, and it may change in arbitrary ways. Mitigating platform risk is just a good idea for all creators.

My advice to high follower accounts on this platform who may be impacted by the Musk deal is to start building up a list of email addresses, so you can stay in touch with followers directly.
