There are a lot of bad things about the shutdown. One of them is that a large number of astronomers cannot attend or present results at the biggest conference of the year. American scientific progress is suffering for the sake of one giant ego and a pointless wall.

NOAA is about to be run by a guy whose top-level corporate culture doesn't believe NOAA has a right to issue public weather forecasts because it unfairly competes with private weather companies. Welcome to the future! Things always get worse!

People starting to make the tough choices: call in sick and risk not being able to come off furlough (that’s what happens when you don’t come in -normally using Leave) or do something unsafe to keep the chance of a paycheck alive.

To my fellow essential Feds: Do One Thing to help your lower paid team members. A meal. A ride. A tank of gas. Anything could make a huge difference in team morale and the community you, a leader, builds at work. Stick together. Just one thing. Hang in there.

Thanked my Federal brothers and sisters when passing through security just now. Talked mortgages, bills, and reassured each other to hang in there. You hang in there, too.

Anchorage used to have 3-6 days per year with a min temp colder than -15°F. We're now gone 10 years without a day that cold – twice as long as the next longest streak. If you are wondering, no station moves and no change in urbanization in decades.

Funny. No one asked this Fed how I feel about the . But I'll tell you: It's ridiculous and it sucks. I can't do my work, but it's costing our government an a$$load of money to "work" this way. The Trumpeter baldies don't speak for me.

Trump has absolutely no idea what’s coming. He understands that DC is about to change, but he’s never experienced — and he’s vastly unprepared for — real oversight. Welcome, Madam Speaker.
