Facebook says it is ending its research program on Apple devices, just hours after @JoshConstine's story on TechCrunch. FB takes issue with a couple of details that have been reported. Added this new statement:pic.twitter.com/0aevJMPDT4

Absurdly, the detail about them ending the program on Apple came "on background" from a Facebook spokesperson, meaning I can't directly quote what was shared. I've asked them to reconsider this approach on such an important detail.

If I had the energy I'd ask them to reconsider this approach full stop, frankly.

Another update relating to consent. FB statement said teens had provided parental consent before using the program. I asked FB what exactly that meant - signed form, scanned? - they said the vendors handled it. For at least one of the vendors, consent was basically a checkbox.

Moving quickly along the FB PR crisis timeline, folks: - Story breaks (well done @JoshConstine) ✅ - "They consented!" ✅ - "Nothing to see here, but we're stopping it..." ✅ - Angrily dispute certain details, ignore substance ✅ - Stamos? - "We owe it to our users to do better."

I thought I'd see how robust the parental control for Facebook's programme is. In less than five minutes I was able to sign up as a 14-year-old boy... with two kids. It required no proof of parental consent at all. I've just been sent a link to download the iOS app.pic.twitter.com/z6www8SgQJ

Facebook's statement, less than an hour ago: "less than 5 percent of the people who chose to participate in this market research program were teens. All of them with signed parental consent forms."

Child’s age of data consent post GDPR varyies wildly across Europe and will be major issue for social media services as regulators ask basic questions along the lines of the nonsense you have uncovered. See very good overview athttps://www.betterinternetforkids.eu/web/portal/practice/awareness/detail?articleId=3017751 …

Some services seem to be driving deliberately into this - for instance WhatsApp raising age from 13 to 16 in 2018 without external verification of its previously 13yo users. Will have cohort now of 14-16yos who presumably have only self verifiedhttps://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-43888647 …

Raise the age limit to 18. Then, 14-year-olds will have to claim to be 18 to get access. If they want to engage in teen stuff - sign up as one of their own parents and give consent. OK. So make it tough. Force 40-year-olds to get a signed confirmation of ID at a police station.

When I was 14 and playing Neopets I had to fax them a copy of a document with my parent's signature before they allowed me to talk on the forums. I feel like their system should be a little tougher than what they have now, especially because they're paying these kids.

Imho, it's not terribly realistic for a co. with billions of customers to handle this facet of their business adequately. They should be held accountable and make every effort, but if they had a million ppl watching, each would have 1000s of accts to check. Sounds hard, at best

Many problems in tech are hard. That’s not an excuse for doing some half-arsed crap instead.
