I'm convinced there are diminishing returns from continually going to events in the same field (e.g. design) - there's more to learn by say going to a marketing or sales or leadership event. It's there that discoveries of new (to us) models/frameworks/methods will be found.

I ask, in part, because it seems that many senior (and very senior) designers are NOT going to the events for the design field(s), because little of value or interest is offered to them. I agree that other events can be valuable, but there are also designer-y topics they want.

I really enjoyed C2 in Montreal two years ago because it was a "design" conference not focused on digital / web / mobile / UX stuff. I loved listening to presentations from architects and writers and medical professionals, etc.

What's truly new and different and better. Stories of effective large-scale product design, especially systemic. Unexpected discoveries.

Thanks! I'm working on creating a set of recommended topics for senior designers at Google to start writing / speaking / sharing about. I've identified a set of topics (e.g., learning from failure, wicked problems, designing at scale), but want to hear what others really want.
-
That will be an interesting list. I'll add "doing exec level collaboration well" to it.

New approaches, both to specific design problems and to org design. New lenses on old topics, and things that challenge conventional wisdom. Diverse perspectives.
-
And sometimes things that confirm my confirmation biases, because I'm only human.

And you're always right. ;)

Needless to say!

I prefer workshops not conferences. I do not want to sit in the audience and be spoken at. I prefer to work together with the expert and others. Applied learning.

Case studies. Process improvement and technique. Where to grow next. Diversity. And then everything that
@cwodtke had on her list. -
I can easily double that list, fwiw

Language, cognition, conversation. Anything that has expert knowledge or can be used as prescriptive advice. Any data on conversational behaviour between people and AI.

I like to hear other peoples process to be honest. Most of the stuff you can search online but getting a genuine feel of how others work within their teams and the resources they rely on is most valuable.

Scaling designed and tested components across different systems while allowing for “it depends” differences Living with & trying to navigate internal politics Good mentoring

The last conference I attended was data science and AI focused. UX conferences provide little value except for networking.
-
The topics that are most interesting to me are: - Designing for emergent tech - How do Design & Product work with data scientists - Understanding and mining behaviors in digital experiences

I'm also much more interested in technological innovation in (any) given fields than in Design as the subject. Banking, healthcare, environment.
