That assertion seems to be based on the assumption the Reader was the dominant (by a very large margin) RSS tool at the time. Was it?

I think what Dash, Joy and others are implying that even if the usage was relatively low the useRS were disproportionally involved in media & in signal boosting. Which is hard to measure.

...although later on Dash does claim that GR had "10s of millions of users." No idea what source he claims for that. I'll say more off Tw tho, coz that sparks a thought.

"Although the product enjoyed a loyal audience, over the years its use has declined." - March 2013 (after 8 years as a product) At the time, Flipboard and other similar visual content reader apps were gaining popularity rapidly. I don't think that retiring Reader was the cause.
