Forgive me if this is an obvious question, I don't cook much... is there a reason ovens and ranges are attached to each other?

I suspect it goes back to the wood and coal fired "cookers" - people built one fire in a big metal device, radiant heat kept the ovens hot and the warmers warm, direct heat kept the cooking surface hot, and it needed only one chimney (often from the old open hearth & fireplace.)

Why are railways the width they are? Roman wagons were two horse's asses wide, so were their roads, so became the rails (and then our roads and cars.) When we look back far enough we see the seeds of so many modern devices! :)
