I hear and support all that. I’ve tried to keep everything, including thinking about the possible outcomes of my work, as ethical as possible. Never owned a place to live, will never own a Tesla (okay, that last is in part by choice). But rent has been tight at times.
Yeah, I get it, but we need to be OK with taking a stand and not just acquiescing. We may lose or be overridden (or replaced), but we tried. Any designer who says, "Let's make it harder for users, let's make it confusing, and let's hide it" needs to re-think their attitude.

Often at talks I see new designers shocked to hear that a senior designer ever said “no” or asked “why”. Makes me think our design education is failing people.

I recently did some mock interviews with students, and I pointed out when they designed their assumptions and biases into their products. They had not realized they were doing it, and were caught off guard being questioned about why it might be wrong.
