ANNIHILATION is a fantastic movie, and yet it was barely promoted or advertised to me despite it literally checking *all* my favorite interest boxes. I went to see it thanks to @TessaThompson_x & @GreatDismal’s tweets!https://twitter.com/cevangelista413/status/967454666236809216 …
It's on my list to see. I was an advertising target and started seeing ads months ago, then in the last few weeks it all stopped. I thought that was a bad sign leading up to the release...

I saw a few static ads which didn’t do a very compelling job. I may be not “mainstream” enough to advertise to effectively? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
-
I can't comment on your "mainstream-ness", but you're certainly out there, present, and profile-able. Yeah, you're probably not mainstream enough. You're too insightful and liberal.

TBH I think that despite the surface trappings of a Predator-style alien-hunting thriller we see in the trailer, the sci-fi part is closer conceptually to Upstream Color, and they just didn't know how to market it.
-
Good point: sci-fi that makes you think is harder to market that sci-fi with guns and monsters to blow up...
-
More space for that on TV, with anthology shows like Black Mirror and Electric Dreams. That said, Arrival did very well with a high concept premise.
