Same for restaurant menus. Why are their websites just download sites for menu PDFs?

You're right, Dave. Years ago, I built website for a restaurant. Spent a lot of time with client discussing why HTML version of menus would make customers happy.

I once asked, and the owner said it was the easiest way to get menus online when they change regularly. He had no idea how he might edit a live site - even uploading a PDF was fraught with error... I was chanting "CMS, CMS, CMS" under my breath.

If there’s a computerized order entry system it’s in theory the same data, just displaying different custom fields for different users. See also: Tablets as menus, esp those kiosk sized ones at McD’s

If they have trouble uploading a PDF, would they (a) know that the data in one system could be connected to the rendering in another, (b) afford the additional back-end coding necessary to make it happen, and (c) already have the skills to edit the menu items in the order system?

The order system is critical; can’t bill customers without it. Many restaurants are computerized from FOH to the kitchen, bar inventory etc. Ties in to management, supply chain etc. CMS could run on top of menu system.
