good god. I know you pay a bunch of UX & service designers over there @facebook - wtf exactly are they all doing?https://twitter.com/Hellchick/status/942863353403150336 …

For those of you who work in social media, I need to share the story of my friend who died, and I didn't know because algorithms.

An algorithm didn't pick up on the importance of a post and it's the fault of all Facebook designers? That seems unfair at best. Depending on how the post was worded, it could have been tricky to determine its ranking.(Clearly it was.)

a 14-year-old service focused on human connection couldn't deal with the critical if hopefully infrequent use case of a friend's death? they don't check that with every release? that's not an algorithm's fault, that's people's fault.

She missed a post. It turned out to be important later on. Doesn't sound like anyone marked him as deceased or posted from his account something to that effect. (And there are tools for doing so.)

I missed 8 months (or something?) of a friend's cancer blogging because I presume of a setting I made; I only found out after they died. I always blamed myself for how I configured, but imagine if software had helped me get to say goodbye or offer support.

Death and sickness are difficult for humans to accept and evaluate, too. We want to be informed, but not reminded. I fear this is a wicked problem and situation, because when there is loss, no one is "satisfied" with their experience. There is no single solution for everyone.

I'm not supporting any product or service here - just saying I'm not sure there is an accurate and reliable way to deal with loss in an automated way. It is ALWAYS an intensely personal, individual, unique moment.

It’s almost like designing these systems to encourage people to “connect” with an unmanageable number of people and then creating tools to “manage” all those relationships in an attempt to create more advertising opportunities has negative consequences 🤔
