Good design takes care of business but doesn’t start or stop there. I love seeing teams do good things that aren’t only about metrics.https://twitter.com/healtheugene/status/919518481636298752 …

Not gonna take sides here. Designing for billions of people inevitably uncovers unforeseen issues. Nothing is 100% correct, best, or right.
Totally agree it needs an option setting. A “how / who might this harm?” review should be at least a regular team discussion in tech.
Ok, slight shift in topic: "make it a setting" is often seen as a poor solution by design teams that "don't know what to do, let users pick"
Also true. Ideal in this case: study whether showing calories actually changes behavior. If not: drop it. If yes: setting.
Just playing a thought game here, but the point is that all UXers should play this game ALL THE TIME FOR ALL THE PERMUTATIONS.

Agreed. Key points: 1. Org values should drive decisions. 2. Consider (& seek feedback about) possible harm. 3. Learn & adapt.
In closing: It's not easy. It's usually messy. Everything changes. Complexity grows over time. Eventually you need to stop and clean up.
Yep, you just have to keep asking the questions. Why is this feature good, for whom? Why is it bad, for whom?
