I think you need to look more closely. Yes, it was arbitrary then, but we are objecting now. It's become a standard now.

Sure - I agree with you even. But that's about how twitter's priorities not tweet length tradeoffs.

True. I just wish they had not put that time and effort toward doubling character count, so it's kind of about tweet length... :)
