Will try online today. In the local installed version, it just creates a group, but the two contained paths are unchanged.

Web version on Chrome 59 does the same thing. Also tried to convert to "raw paths" first - difference only creates a group, no path mods.

Not sure why I would use intersection if I want to retain the difference between two closed paths. I used Merge > Difference in toolbar.
