OK, in light of my previous tweet about a lack of established UX 'canon', let's try an experiment. What's your 'I can believe we haven't standardized on it!' things in UX?

There are some interesting variables on continua here that seem to influence the degree of standardization: - Tolerable frustration / nuisance - Life threatening / risk / danger - Aesthetic pleasantness / art / style We seem more likely to standardize under some conditions.

Exactly! What we may find are the reasons we DONT standardize. In the case of shower fixtures, there is just to much aesthetic need to be unique/different/fun that it's unlikely to happen.

Sometimes it's easier to understand what something is NOT than to understand what it is.
It's often easier to justify why we don't standardize than to persuade why we should (or could.)
People die? Standardize!
People smile? Unique it up!
Frustration < cost? Janky OK!
