How many people actually use their smartphone as a phone and make calls?https://twitter.com/chrislhayes/status/1032662306616791040 …
Do you mean that you want to use the phone as a phone while still using it for other things when you say "no full-screen takeover"? On Android, "Phone" IS an app, and it can be put into split-screen mode or set aside (background) during calls to do other things.

Ah, I was unclear, sorry. What I mean is that I’d like to disable the full-screen takeover and audio interruption when the phone rings, maybe replacing it with a banner or something. I haven’t used an Android phone in a while, but on iOS, this is really disruptive.

Ah, the incoming call experience. On my Pixel 2 with Android P and Google Fi for carrier service, incoming phone calls (while using another app) are displayed as a notification at the top of the screen - not a full-screen takeover.

That sounds much nicer! Hopefully Apple catches up soon!

Buy a Pixel phone. :)
